These single images, while there was no question of documenting reality, draw on the wealth and diversity of India. There is something incredibly compelling about Indian culture and I sought to express that core spirit through the visual poetry which I intuited dwelling in the ancient Hindu icons.

The time I spent in India, one of the best times of my life, turned into an intensely personal journey. As I worked among Calcutta's potters in a district called Kumartuli, daily gathering the imagery, I felt somehow akin with both the ancient as well as the contemporary Indian image makers. Only my stone, or river mud straw and bamboo which they worked with had become light sensitive film, watercolour paper and gum emulsion.

During this time I also lived with an Indian family. Having breakfast and dinner with them, becoming involved in extended family politics. I am thankful they allowed me into their home and afforded me the privilege of becoming family during my time working in India.

One thing I learned through this experience is we humans are basically the same. Irrespective of a countries social mores or religious beliefs, humans everywhere seek genuine meaning to life.
